Police to acquire tech to neutralise illegal drones: DGP | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: Odisha police will soon obtain anti-drone or counter-unmanned aerial technology to neutralise unauthorised drones, DGP Y B Khurania said during the 90th foundation day celebrations of state police in Cuttack, which coincided with Odisha Divas on Tuesday.
As per the plan, the proposed advanced equipment shall be deployed to safeguard VIP gatherings, sensitive security areas and locations where the unmanned aerial devices could potentially trigger law and order concerns.
“We are in the process of acquiring anti-drone technology to detect and disable rogue unmanned aerial flying objects. The initiative aligns with national security guidelines regarding drone regulations and restricted airspace protection,” Khurania told TOI.
As per the plan, state police may obtain some anti-drone guns to tackle the growing menace. The anti-drone system will include radar detection capabilities, radio frequency analysis and optical sensors to identify flying objects within restricted airspace. The sophisticated devices can track multiple drones simultaneously and determine their exact location, altitude and direction of flight, police sources said.
The technology will enable law enforcement to differentiate between authorised and unauthorised drones, helping them counter potential security threats. The system also incorporates signal jamming mechanisms to safely ground suspicious drones without causing collateral damage. The feature is particularly crucial near airports, vital govt installations and strategic facilities.
Trained personnel will operate these systems round-the-clock, ensuring swift response to any aerial threat. The technology also maintains detailed logs of all detected drone activities, which can assist in investigation and intelligence gathering.
According to the Drone Rules, 2021 released by the Union civil aviation ministry, registration of unmanned aircraft systems is mandatory, and no person shall operate such a system without first registering it on the digital sky platform and obtaining a unique identification number.
“Drone operators must get themselves registered with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s ‘DigitalSky’ portal. Upon registration, the operator would be given a unique identification number (UIN),” another police officer said. Operators, who use drones to shoot events such as marriages and festivals, should get approval from the police station concerned, police sources said.
