Poachers: 2 poachers held with carcasses of 15 birds | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: Forest personnel arrested two bird poachers at Deipur in Chilika wildlife division on Tuesday evening and seized carcasses of 15 birds of two species — grey-headed swamphen (14) and watercock (1).
“The accused persons were identified as Santosh Kumar Palei (24) and Tulu Palei (27) of Deipur in Puri district,” said Amlan Nayak, divisional forest officer (DFO), Chilika.They were carrying the birds for a village feast when the forest personnel caught them, he added.
He said the poachers killed the birds by poisoning. After conducting postmortem, the carcasses have been buried, the DFO said. Nayak said tissue samples of the carcasses would be sent to the Centre for Wildlife Health at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) and State Forensic Science Laboratory, Bhubaneswar for toxicological analysis.
Though there was not a single poaching case registered in Chilika last winter, it was the second case registered in the division in a fortnight. tnn
