MUMBAI: PM Narendra Modi Saturday urged the Indian media to expand its global influence by extending its social media outreach to international languages recognised by the United Nations. He also sought its cooperation to instil “a sense of duty among citizens” as the country celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution.
The PM spoke after he inaugurated the B wing of the INS Towers (Indian Newspaper Society) in Bandra-Kurla Complex Saturday evening.The 14-story structure comprises 1.25 lakh sq ft of space which houses the offices of several newspapers. INS is an 85-year-old institution that was established in 1939. It has 800 members on its rolls.
The PM unveiled a plaque bearing his name at the entrance. CM Eknath Shinde, deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar as well as governor Ramesh Bais joined him upon the dais.
Modi said the role of newspapers was crucial to the journey of Viksit Bharat. “Media is not a mute spectator to the happenings in the country. It is also responsible for bringing about change and granting direction. The citizens of a nation who gain confidence in their capabilities begin to achieve new heights of success. This is happening in India today,” he said.
Lauding the efforts of the INS, Modi said, “INS came into existence well before Independence and its work has benefited many people. I congratulate INS on this large, modern building which will bring ease of working to the industry.”
The PM said India is at a stage where the next 25 years are crucial. “The media makes people aware of their rights and their own capability. It deserves credit for promoting the govt’s programmes like Digital India by which our digital payments system has become a model for other countries. Jan Dhan Yojna helped 50 crore people open bank accounts.” He cited the press’ role in spreading the cause of environmental protection and recommended that it aid tourism by promoting one state each month in a concerted manner.
INS president Rakesh Sharma effusively praised the PM and drew his attention to matters facing the newspaper industry including recent changes in advertising policy.
INS’ past president Mohit Jain said the institution has always supported freedom of the press and seeks the PM’s support to uphold the fourth pillar of democracy.
