Patna woman loses Rs30 lakh to cyberfraud

Patna: A 33-year-old resident of Digha fell victim to a stock market investment fraud after cybercriminals siphoned off Rs 30 lakh from her account.
Confirming the incident, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and Cyber police station SHO Raghwendra Mani Tripathi said they received a complaint from victim Jyoti Kumari on December 9, following which an FIR was registered.
Tripathi said the victim received a call from an unknown number on October 18, and the caller identified herself as one Ritika Devi, a “broking agent” of a private company. “The fraudster informed the woman about an investment plan, added her number to an instant messaging app group and shared a portal for investment. The vctim invested Rs 30 lakh in 45 instalments,” Tripathi said, as mentioned in the FIR.
The complainant further mentioned in the FIR that when she tried to withdraw her money, she couldn’t do it. “I called the woman, who told me that since I was not investing the money on time, my account was terminated. The fraudster also removed me from the WhatsApp group and even asked for Rs 35 lakh as subscription tax,” she said in the complaint.
Tripathi told this newspaper that police are verifying all the documents. In cybercrimes, it takes time to gather details from the bank, he said.
The DSP said lately, cybercrime cases have increased, and they have many pending cases. “It is difficult for the police to solve cybercrime cases as the nameless and faceless fraudsters cheat innocent people from behind the digital screens,” he said.
