Patna University Exams Postponed Amidst Non-Teaching Staff Strike | – Times of India

Patna: Patna University (PU) Master of Arts (political science) student Animesh Chandra had to wait for more than three hours for his Semester III exam to begin at Patna Science College centre, but in vain, on Friday morning.
He had to return home disappointed as Patna University (PU) on Friday postponed all its postgraduate and undergraduate examinations until further order in the wake of an indefinite strike by the non-teaching staff since Thursday.
Examination controller Shyamal Kishor told the newspaper here that the examinations scheduled for Friday could not be held at Patna College, Patna Science College, B N College and Vanijya Mahavidyalaya centres as the agitating employees had locked the main gates of all these institutions. The agitating employees were also creating obstacles in the conduct of examinations.
According to the university officials, the examinees in large number had turned up at all the centres, kept waiting for the commencement of their examinations for hours until they learnt about the postponement of examinations.
Chandra said had the university announced the postponement of the exams earlier, he would not have wasted three hours. He apprehended the postponement would cause unnecessary delay in publication of results, derailing timely completion of the course.
However, the examinations at Patna Law College and Patna Training College were held as scheduled on Friday with the help of police and magistrates. The centre superintendent asked the law and order officers to break the locks and allow the examinees to enter the hall.
As the questions could not reach the centre, the college authorities obtained the question paper online from the university and got it printed for distribution among the examinees waiting inside the examination hall, said Patna Law College principal Vani Bhushan. The examination at Patna Training College centre was also held peacefully.
The controller said that the remaining examination schedule from Saturday would remain postponed. The new date of examinations would be announced shortly, he said.
Also, all the academic activities in the affiliated colleges and postgraduate departments of PU remained completely paralyzed for the second consecutive day on Friday.
The non-teaching employees of PU have gone on indefinite strike to press for their pending demands, including payment of arrears of revised pay scales, appointment of the dependents of deceased staff on compassionate grounds and implementation of assured career promotion scheme.
Meanwhile, the members of the negotiating committee, headed by PU development officer Khagendra Kumar, held several rounds of discussions with the representatives of the striking staff, but the stalemate continued.
Employees’ union president Subodh Kumar said the lock-up of the university would continue until all their demands were conceded.
