Patna: Mayor Sita Sahu and a section of councillors of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday walked out during a conclave on solid waste management, organised by the state urban development and housing department, here on Thursday to protest against the Bihar Municipal (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Bill was passed to during the monsoon session of the state assembly.
Sahu told the mediapersons that their delegation had met urban development and housing department minister, Nitin Nabin for two consecutive days and raised their concern over snatching of powers of representatives of urban local bodies, but the talks did not yield any results.“Under the banner of Bihar Nagar Nikaye Mahasangh, a letter has been written to governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expressing concern over the new Bill. This issue will be discussed with him and we will urge him to scrap the Bill,” she said, adding, “The protest against the municipal bill has intensified and the local representatives have made me the president of the sangh, which we formed on Wednesday. The govt has left us with no choice but to knock on the doors of the court. We will move Patna high court against the Bill.”
The mayor further said, “People have elected me as the mayor and I will work for their welfare and development of the city. But for this, our powers have been snatched through the new Bill. If we have to go to different departments even for getting done petty works, what is the use of getting elected as the mayor or councillors,” she said.
The councillors present in the conference said municipal corporations were autonomous bodies and had the right to take their decision independently.
