Chief minister Eknath Shinde visited Coastal Road‘s southbound tunnel on Tuesday after visuals of leakage and cracks on the tunnel’s wall went viral on social media. Based on a preliminary investigation, he said the leakage was from expansion joints and was being addressed on priority.
He also announced that part of the road’s northbound carriageway would be opened on June 10.BMC officers said the opening of the entire road has now been pushed to October. When the southbound carriageway (Worli to Marine Drive) was inaugurated in March, the state government and the BMC had announced a complete opening of the road by May 31.
On the leakage issue, Shinde said, “Even if leakage is occurring only through two or three expansion joints, I have instructed the civic administration to carry out injection grouting (the injection of specially formulated cement-based mixes into a structure to improve its strength or reduce permeability) so that the seepage points are sealed and a permanent solution is arrived at.” The chief minister said that the main structure is safe and the rainy season should not be a concern. “Works on sealing the leakage would be carried out even as traffic movement continues,” he said.
The June 10 opening would be only of the northbound carriageway’s Marine Drive to Haji Ali stretch. “The remaining stretch, up to Bandra-Worli Sea Link, would be completed by October,” said a BMC official.
Earlier on Tuesday, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray took to social media criticising the delay in opening the entire road. “The Mumbai Coastal Road would have been fully completed and opened to citizens by December 2023 had the MVA been in government. However, after the corrupt regime (the current government) toppled our regime, they slowed down the work and worked on cost escalation.
“Inaugurations were planned multiple times in February, and yet as I pointed out back then, only for one lane. Finally the one lane was opened hurriedly, to claim electoral credit for our project, before elections.”
Thackeray said the southbound carriageway works “from 8am to about 6pm”. “Then we were given timelines that the entire road would be opened by March, then April, then May. Now it’s almost June.” He said the delay will be investigated “when we form government”.
In reply, Shinde said, “There is no question of taking credit. This project has been beneficial to the city and we have seen how film actor Amitabh Bachchan also posted its benefits.”
