Mumbai:The issuance of licences to 32,000 street hawkers, which has been hanging fire for 10 years since a survey was conducted, is finally picking up steam. For, the election process for vendors on the town vending committee (TVC) will be held on Aug 29.
The final voter list has been made available in all municipal wards, said BMC.
It’ll be the TVC’s mandate to finalise hawking zones.
BMC said the filing of nominations will begin on Aug 5, the scrutiny will be on Aug 14, the publishing of the list of nominations on Aug 16, and withdrawal of nominations will be allowed on Aug 20. There will be no charge for filing nomination papers.
Meanwhile, Shashank Rao, president of Mumbai Hawkers Union, objected to BMC going by a 10-year-old list of hawkers to issue licences, saying that count is far lower than the current strength. —Richa Pinto

Appeals from hawker unions and prospective elections for Town Vending Committees were also discussed.
