OU frowns on ‘too many’ guests, puts cap on events | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: After banning protests on the campus, Osmania University (OU) has now issued instructions, mandating prior approval from authorities for publishing posters of workshops, conferences or guest lectures.
In a recent circular released by the varsity registrar, colleges or departments were asked to provide details of the invited guests and experts.
“Though, departments/colleges, were obtaining permission for holding events they were publishing posters without consent and confirmation of the invited guests. This is causing embarrassing situations, as most of the time the authorities are preoccupied with several meetings in the govt,” the circular read.
The varsity has also put a cap of 45 minutes on the duration of inaugural or valedictory programmes and stated that ‘too many’ guests should not be invited onto the dais. It further mentioned that events should focus on content rather than on inaugural or valedictory programmes.
The authorities also stated that any press notes should be released only through the PRO, and a copy must be sent to the internal quality assurance cell. They said that each programme should have at least a one-page outcome along with geo-tagged photographs.
The decision, however, has not been well received by faculty, who termed the move as autocratic and added that this will only discourage them from conducting any events.
“A few days back, the varsity banned protests on campus. Now, they are asking us to seek permission to conduct any event. How is this even reasonable? This is nothing but an autocratic move. When we go to meet authorities, they make us wait for hours in front of their chambers. If we have to seek permission for each and every event, no faculty will even come forward to conduct any programmes, and it will be a loss to stakeholders,” said B Manohar, Osmania University Teachers Association.
