Opposition Protests ‘custodial Assault’ Of Army Capt, Fiancée | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Opposition BJD, Congress and AAP on Saturday protested against the alleged assault on an Army officer and molestation of his fiancée by personnel at Bharatpur police station here on Sept 15.
Members of the women’s wing of BJD staged a demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan by holding placards and shouting slogans. “The incident is a clear indication of a weak and inefficient govt.Govt has only suspended the police officers but it is not a punishment for what they have done. A judicial probe must be initiated immediately,” said BJD member Lekhashri Samantsinghar. Former chief minister and leader of opposition Naveen Patnaik said, “It is a matter of great regret that women feel unsafe in police stations even in Bhubaneswar. Employees are being assaulted in the Raj Bhavan. It seems like law and order doesn’t exist in the state.”
Youth Congress activists marched towards chief minister Mohan Majhi’s residence and hurled eggs and tomatoes. They climbed up barricades set up by police and shouted slogans demanding action against the errant police personnel.
“In a civilised society such a crime by police personnel inside a police station is unacceptable. The police officers must be arrested. The CM should tender his resignation,” said Manoj Biswal, a Youth Congress member.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his concern over the incident in a post on X. “The horrific incident in Odisha has raised serious questions about the country’s law and order. A military officer seeking help from the police was brutally beaten, and his fiancée was harassed in custody. This disgraceful incident shames all of humanity. Under the BJP govt, crimes against woman have become completely uncontrollable and rampant. When injustice flourishes and finds refuge within the govt system itself, to whom can ordinary citizens look for help? All those responsible for this incident deserve the harshest legal punishment — strict action against them is needed to set an example of justice and security for the people of India, especially women,” he wrote.
AAP members staged a protest in front of the office of commissionerate police here and submitted a memorandum to the director general of police demanding justice for the victims. Denying all opposition allegations, BJP said the govt has taken all steps to ensure justice to the victims.
“BJP govt is committed to immediate action in this incident following a zero-tolerance policy. The violence against women reached its peak during the 24 years of BJD rule. People of Odisha still remember the tenure of Congress and how unsafe women were. Now the opposition parties are criticising a 100-day-old govt and showing their low mentality,” said BJP spokesperson Anil Biswas.
