Oppn announces statewide protest over ‘crime rise’

Patna: A day after the murder of former state minister Mukesh Sahani’s father Jitan Sahani, the opposition INDI Alliance in Bihar on Wednesday announced a statewide protest against the alleged rise in the incidents of crime in the state on July 20. They have also planned to raise the issue in the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature.
The announcement was made after a joint meeting called at the RJD office under the chairmanship of the party’s state president Jagdanand Singh and attended by the representatives of CPI(ML), CPI, CPI(M) and Congress.
State RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said a protest march will be taken out at all district headquarters and that they will submit a memorandum to the respective DMs. “We will seek the govt’s reply on the increasing crime in Bihar,” Gagan said.
Meanwhile, the murder remained the topic of discussion in the political corridors. Apart from a CPI(ML) delegation, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav too met the Sahani family on Wednesday and expressed shock over the brutal murder. He demanded an all-party meet over “rising crime in Bihar”, saying criminals do not have any caste or religion.
Leader of opposition in the state assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, had on Tuesday night lashed out at the state govt over the murder.
However, JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar hit back saying while the police came closer to nabbing the culprits, it took Tejashwi 14 hours to express his condolence. “Was the delay because Mukesh Sahani comes from Nishad community and is from extremely backward caste,” Neeraj asked.
Union minister of state for home affairs, Nityanand Rai, on the other hand, said that it was during the RJD regime that the CM residence was a headquarter for the criminals and now it was not possible under chief minister Nitish Kumar.
