Onion Prices: Onion prices increase due to erratic weather and demand-supply gap | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Onion prices increased by Rs 10-15 per kg in the last one week affecting family budgets in the city. Erratic weather and increase in demand-supply gap are the main reasons for the rise in prices, said market insiders. Onions are selling for Rs 45 per kg against Rs 30-35 per kg on Monday.
“Onions are an essential part of our kitchen. I bought 2kg onions for Rs 30 per kg last week while on Monday the price increased to Rs 45 per kg.Due to the sudden price hike I have to cut down on the use of onions in my curries,” said Sabita Mishra, a homemaker.
Vendors said the rise in prices has affected sales. “Customers who used to buy 2kg are now taking 1kg or less due to the skyrocketing prices of onions. It is affecting our sales as well as profit, said Srikant Swain, a vegetable vendor. Restaurant owners and street food vendors also felt the pinch. “The price rise of onions is hitting us hard. Onion is the main ingredient in our dishes and omitting onions will affect the taste. We cannot increase the price of the dishes but our profit margins are reducing,” said Basant Sahu, a fast-food shop owner.
Debendra Sahu, secretary of Chhatra Bazar Traders Association in Cuttack, said, “The supply of onion has gone down and the rise in wholesale prices has led to the increase in onion prices in the state. The price of onions is likely to remain high till the new produce comes to the market in September. Delay in arrival of monsoon and unseasonal rain has led to damage to crops. In Maharashtra, the wholesale price has increased at the mandi due to increase in demand and drop in supply.” If the government takes any step on export of onions, there may be some chances of a drop in prices, he added.
