One held for Nepali student’s death | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: A third-year BTech student of KIIT Deemed to be University was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday evening. The 20-year-old girl was a resident of Nepal. Her batchmate was arrested in connection with the alleged suicide.
The incident sparked tension with students staging protest on the campus on Monday morning, demanding justice for the deceased. Police had to be called in to defuse the situation. “An abetment to suicide case has been registered in the incident. Her batchmate, a UP native, was arrested in connection with the case. The cause of death is suicidal hanging. The brother of the deceased, in his complaint, stated that the boy was mentally torturing the girl. Investigation is underway,” said DCP (Bhubaneswar) Pinak Mishra.
Realising the simmering tension and collective anger of the Nepalese students, the university initially asked students from Nepal to return home, but later, the decision was revoked.
Nepal Students’ Union, Kathmandu, in a press release, demanded justice for the deceased. It condemned the university’s actions following the death of the girl. “The girl reportedly faced abuse from the accused. Despite lodging an official complaint against the perpetrator, the university failed to take any action, ultimately leading to her death,” the Union stated in a press release.
They demanded protection and safety guarantees for Nepali students at the institute. “We want a fair and independent inquiry into the death. Action against the accused and officials for negligence,” said the Union in its statement.
