Olive Ridley Turtles: Baby Olive Ridley turtles start journey to sea in Gahirmatha | Bhubaneswar News

Kendrapada: Thousands of baby Olive Ridley turtles started emerging from the pits at Nasi-1 and Nasi-2 islands of Gahirmatha marine sanctuary, considered their largest rookery in the world, on Thursday night and moving towards the sea.
As many as 3,01,159 turtles had laid eggs from April 2 to 7 at Gahirmatha during arribada (nesting period). “A female turtle lays around 80 to 100 eggs,” said Pratush Moharana, forest range officer, Gahirmatha.“Forest guards have been deployed to prevent dogs, jackals, birds and other animals from killing the hatchlings,” he said.
“Out of 1,000 baby turtles, only one survives to become an adult. After reaching about 20 years of age, the baby turtles return to the same beach for mating and laying eggs,” said Hemant Rout, a noted turtle researcher and secretary, Gahirmatha Marine Turtle and Mangrove Conservation Society. Odisha is home to 50% of the total global population of Olive Ridleys and about 90% of the Indian population of sea turtles.
