Odisha’s higher secondary exam 2025 begins: new patterns, mixed reactions, and vigilance measures. | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: As many as 1.14 lakh students from science stream appeared for the Odia paper as the annual Higher Secondary Examination-2025 (Plus II exam), conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), began on Tuesday.
As many as 3,93,618 students from arts, science, commerce and vocational streams are appearing for this year’s HS exams across 1,276 centres, which are all under CCTV surveillance, while five-tier checking provisions have been made to make sure there are no malpractices.
On Tuesday, students from the science stream appeared for the exam, which was held in a single sitting from 10am to 1pm. Examinees described the Odia paper as easy but lengthy, while some teachers raised concerns about spelling mistakes in the paper. “Since it was the first day of the exam, there was some stress, but the paper was neither very easy nor very tough. It was a bit lengthy despite the change in pattern,” Smruti Nayak, a Class XII student, said.
This year, CHSE introduced a new pattern of examination in line with CBSE, with more objective and fewer subjective type questions.
Some students said that though they practised the sample question papers as per the new pattern, the sequence of questions was a bit confusing. “The sequence of questions was not in proper order, leading to some confusion and affecting time management,” Rudra Prasad Dash, another student, said.
“As the students are appearing for the exam in a new pattern this year, the questions could have been a little easier. The paper was lengthy. There were several printing mistakes in the question paper, which should not be there. Slow learners may get confused by the spelling mistakes,” Pushpalata Rath, who teaches Odia at Satchidananda Higher Secondary School, Indipur, Dhenkanal, said.
To prevent malpractice, CHSE implemented a five-tier squad system. Officials assured strict vigilance across all centres. “The first day of the examination went off smoothly without any untoward incident. We deployed squads at multiple levels to ensure fair examinations. One case of malpractice was reported,” said Prasant Parida, CHSE controller of examinations.
The arts and commerce students will appear for the Odia paper on Wednesday.
Students said the number of questions to be answered in the Odia subject is more compared to other subjects, as the maximum mark for a question in Odia is five. “From the first day’s question paper, we get an idea of whether other papers will be tough or easy. Our next paper is English on Feb 22,” Aliva Priyadarshini, another student, said.
The annual higher secondary exam will continue till March 27.
