Odisha startup to supply advanced drones to Army | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: In a move towards strengthening India’s defence capabilities with indigenous technology, Odisha-based startup IG Drones has secured a contract with the Indian Army for supplying advanced drone systems.
The deal includes the delivery of domestically developed VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) and FPV (first-person view) drones, marking a major milestone in India’s defence manufacturing sector.
The contract comes at a time when security concerns regarding foreign-made drones, particularly those having Chinese components, have intensified following recent incidents of drone hijacking near the Pakistan border.
The Army’s decision to partner with IG Drones aligns with the Centre’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Founder and CEO of IG Drones, Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, said the contract reflects the Army’s trust in their ability to deliver secure, world-class drone systems.
“By integrating indigenous innovation with advanced capabilities, we aim to empower the armed forces to meet modern security challenges head-on,” said Bodhisattwa.
VTOL systems are specifically designed for operations in extreme environment, offering crucial advantages in mountainous terrains and areas without conventional runways. FPV drones provide real-time surveillance capabilities essential for counter-infiltration operations.
Major General RC Padhi, senior vice-president, IG Drones, said, “These advanced drone systems will play a pivotal role in ensuring reliable surveillance, precise intelligence gathering and enhanced border security.”
The number of drone startups in Idnia has more than doubled in the past three years to 398, surpassing China’s 298. Initiatives by the govt such as Drone Shakti scheme have catalysed the sector’s growth.
“IG Drones’ commitment to excluding Chinese components from their platforms addresses critical national security concerns while demonstrating India’s growing capabilities in advanced defence technology manufacturing,” the company said in a statement.
It stated that the strategic partnership marks a new chapter in India’s defence modernisation efforts, emphasising the crucial role of indigenous technology in maintaining national security.
