Odisha launches 40 new electric buses to boost sustainable urban mobility | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The state govt strengthened its commitment to sustainable urban mobility by launching 40 new electric buses under the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT). Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra inaugurated the fleet at Gadakana depot on Thursday.
“This expansion marks a significant step towards Viksit Odisha and our green future,” said Mahapatra during the launch. The addition brings CRUT’s electric bus count to 180 out of its total fleet of 560 buses, serving over 300,000 daily commuters.
The Ama Bus service, formerly known as Mo Bus, currently operates on 106 routes in Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Berhampur. The new additions will increase frequency on 15 key routes, with schedule revisions planned for April 4, 2025.
Looking ahead, the govt plans to introduce 100 more electric buses under the state scheme and 400 additional e-buses through the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. To support this expansion, new electric depots are under construction in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela and Sambalpur.
CRUT officials confirmed the initiative includes enhanced safety measures and service improvements to ensure reliable and comfortable travel for commuters. The expansion reflects Odisha’s ongoing commitment to developing smart and sustainable urban transportation solutions.
Route modifications will affect key corridors, including Bhubaneswar station to Bhagwanpur via AIIMS, AIIMS to Sai Mandira (Kesora) and SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack to Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar.
“This development represents another milestone in Odisha’s journey toward eco-friendly public transportation, reinforcing the state’s position as a leader in sustainable urban mobility solutions,” reads a statement from CRUT.
