Notifications issued for land acquisition for Bargarh-Nuapada new line | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: State govt has issued two notifications for land acquisition for the Bargarh-Nuapada new railway line project. One for Bargarh and the other for Nuapada. The project aims to boost connectivity, spur regional development, create jobs, and enhance both passenger and freight transport facilities in the region.
The notifications, issued on Nov 29, were made public on Thursday. The project requires the acquisition of 924.6 hectares of land, estimated to cost around Rs 364 crore. Of this, 752.5 hectares is private land, 123.2 hectares is govt land, and 48.9 hectares is forest land.
“The acquisition process is progressing smoothly, with the competent authorities for land acquisition in both Bargarh and Nuapada districts having been appointed through gazette notifications published recently,” an official statement from East Coast Railway (ECoR) said.
Nuapada Collector Madhusudan Dash confirmed that ground-level work would commence soon.
The railway board sanctioned the project on Sept 10 last year. An estimated cost of Rs 2,107 crore will be spent on civil engineering, Rs 305 crore on electrical engineering, and Rs 209 crore on signal and telecom engineering.
According to official sources from ECoR, the state govt has extended its support by providing land free of cost and granting Rs 300 crore for the project.
The new rail line, an electrified broad gauge main line running from Bargarh Road to Nuapada Road via Padampur, will offer a shorter, alternative route that bypasses the congested Jharsuguda-Bilaspur-Raipur circuit. This new route will reduce the travel distance by 53 km compared to the Sambalpur-Jharsuguda-Raipur route and 87 km compared to the Sambalpur-Titilagarh-Raipur route.
“The railways is committed to ensuring the speedy progress of land acquisition and construction activities, ensuring that this infrastructure milestone is achieved for the benefit of the people of Odisha,” said an official statement from ECoR.
The project faced a setback in July 2021 when the Centre shelved it, citing operational inefficiencies. It was one of the major issues during the Padampur by-election held on Dec 5, 2022.
