Notice to school for expelling pupils over fee non-payment | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: The school education department has issued a notice to Safa High School and Junior College in Umerkhadi near Byculla, after the institution allegedly expelled several students on June 16, the first day of the new academic year, over non-payment of fees. The notice mentioned that the school is liable for disciplinary action under the provisions of the RTE Act, 2009.Abdul Sattar Sheikh, whose child was among those expelled, said students were made to stand outside in a shed, while parents were called to collect them. He alleged that children whose parents attended meetings over the fee dispute were specifically targeted. The school has been embroiled in a fee-related dispute with parents since 2020. Sunil Sawant, who issued the notice to the school before he was shifted from assistant deputy director of education (south division) post, confirmed the action. “A number of parents of students at Safa School had concerns regarding the fee structure. We have sent a letter to the school and are awaiting their response,” he added. School officials were unavailable for comment till the time of going to press.
