Nothing beats the live show experience: Boyce Avenue | Bengaluru News

T his weekend, American band Boyce Avenue, comprising Alejandro Manzano, Fabian Manzano and Daniel Manzano, famously known for their cover tracks, are coming to Bengaluru to perform. “I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I feel like the people in India are dialled in when they come to a show,” band member Daniel Manzano told Bangalore Times, ahead of the show. Excerpts:
‘IF THE AUDIENCE IS NOT HAVING FUN, OUR PERFORMANCE REFLECTS THAT’
There’s nothing quite like the live experience; when you’re in a room and everyone’s singing, there’s a vibration to it, and it can’t be replicated online. But, if the audience doesn’t let loose or isn’t having fun, or is a bit reserved, then our performance kind of reflects that a little bit. But, we’ve had some really fun shows in India and it’s always good to be back.
‘AT THIS PHASE IN OUR CAREER, WE ARE DOING MORE MEANINGFUL WORK’
There’s no specific formula for us when it comes to making covers. But we also do have habits. We are getting to a phase in our career where we’re doing more and more of the songs that we grew up listening to and loving. Early on in our career, we tried to cover whatever was popular but made it sound like us. We wanted to put our own stamp to it, but now, we’re not that interested in just recreating songs that are trending.
When we first started making covers, there was a little bit of taboo around it. People thought that we were not real musicians. But now, reputable artistes also do cover songs

‘MAKING COVERS AND ORIGINALS ARE SIMILAR, YET DIFFERENT’
Even if we are making covers or creating our own originals, I think it’s a similar process, in the sense that you have to dig deep and get creative and also make difficult decisions, But, when you’re writing an original, it feels a lot more personal and feels like more is at stake. So there’s a tendency to overthink. These are your own words and your voice, so we take a lot longer while working on an original song.
‘WITH COVERS, WE TRY TO CREATE AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER’
When we cover a song, the creativity really comes in how you sing those melodies and also create a dynamic with the cords. We’re not making the track funky and being super artsy with it, we’re trying to create more of an emotional roller coaster. We try to highlight the ups and downs of the song and make you feel something.
‘We are not really connected with the current music scene’
I feel like a lot has changed from the time we started making music and we are not really that connected with the current music scene. We’re at a point in our career where we’re trying to revisit the music that inspired us when we were younger. Now, singing is also not as important. You can be rapping or editing your voice in drastic ways. I see why it’s popular but that’s something we can’t relate to at all.
