Norwester brings respite from heat in city | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The capital city got respite from the heat with a norwester shower on Saturday evening. As the first drops fell, residents emerged from their homes, welcoming the natural air conditioning with open arms and bright smiles.
Stalls of local tea vendors transformed into cosy havens, with people huddling under makeshift shelters, clutching steaming cups of chai. Ajit Kumar Mishra, a retired bureaucrat, in his X post said, “Weather relief in Bhubaneswar! Dark clouds, rain, and a soothing breeze brought much-needed respite from the scorching heat in Bhubaneswar, thanks to the Kalbaisakhi storm. Nature’s bliss in the evening!”
Mercury in the city touched a maximum of 36.3°C during the day. As evening turned to night, the rain-washed city sparkled under streetlights with people strolling outside. The brief shower left behind a lasting impact – clean air, cooled surfaces, and rejuvenated spirits. “The light to moderate rainfall under the influence of norwester brought some relief to people from the gruelling summer. From children to elderly people, all felt grateful for this timely respite from summer’s relentless advance,” said Sujit Nayak, a Patia resident.
A few more places in the state also witnessed rain or thunderstorm activities with lightning or gusty surface wind causing some damage or bringing trouble for locals. Traffic on a busy road at Digapahandi in Ganjam district was disrupted for over an hour due to a tree uprooted and blocking the road.
Baripada recorded the highest 40 mm rainfall during the day in the state, followed by Khurda town with 12 mm rainfall, said the IMD rainfall report in the evening. Manorama Mohanty, scientist and head of the regional IMD centre in the city, further forecast that such rain or thunderstorm activities would continue in several districts in the state for another six to seven days.
IMD has issued a yellow warning of thunderstorm activities in several districts, mostly in coastal pockets, during the period. There would also be a warning of heavy rainfall in two districts — Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj — for two days on the coming Monday and Tuesday, the forecast said. The forecast added that the prevailing day temperature trend would also see no large change for the next three days and thereafter would drop by 2°C to 3°C.
All such forecasts came with the day temperature touching 40°C to over 41°C in six towns of western Odisha. Jharsuguda at 41.6°C recorded the highest temperature of the day.
