North Chennai residents left in the dark overnight

Chennai: After Maduravoyal and Pattabiram faced power outages in the past two weeks, residents of Kodungaiyur, Vyasarpadi, K K D Nagar, and nearby areas endured a blackout that lasted an entire night. The disruption was triggered on Saturday when both power sources to the Kodungaiyur substation fault-tripped consecutively, while an underground cable caught fire within the substation premises.H Deepak, a resident of Vivekanandan Nagar in Kodungaiyur, said power supply was cut around 6pm and did not resume until Sunday morning. “There was no response from TNPDCL. We did not know when the power supply would be restored as there was no update. We were left to suffer in the dark,” he said.Consumers expressed their ire on social media and said residents of Kavignar Kannadasan Nagar, Vysarpadi, Sembium, and MKB Nagar also suffered without electricity for more than three hours. Tiruchandar, a resident of Vyasarpadi, said that frequent power cuts plague North Chennai. “On Saturday, it became a nightmare,” he said.TNPDCL officials said the outage was caused by the tripping of two feeders to the Kodungaiyur 33kV substation one after another. ” Kodungaiyur is primarily fed from Tondiarpet 230kV station. Around 5.45pm on Saturday, the supply from Tondiarpet tripped. When the power supply was switched to the secondary source from Sembium 110kV substation, the breaker tripped instantaneously due to overload. So, power supply was suspended to the entire region,” said an official.Meanwhile, the HT cable linking Sembium substation with Kodungaiyur caught fire, and thick smoke emanated from the substation. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and put out the fire. Electricity leakage from the damaged cable is said to have caused the fire. TNPDCL officials said that there were no major damages to the substation except for the burnt cable.TNPDCL officials said that the power supply was restored to the majority of the consumers by 10pm. The burnt cable was replaced overnight, but it could not be brought alive as Metrowater had punctured the same cable in another location. Work to fix the damage is on, said officials.
