No future CM will dare to stop fine rice scheme for poor: Revanth | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Sunday said the distribution of fine rice to the poor through ration shops will stand out as one of the most glorious welfare schemes in the history of the country. No govt or chief minister will dare to withdraw it, as it aims to provide the poor with quality rice, he said.
Addressing a public meeting in Huzurnagar assembly constituency, represented by civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, the CM said six kg of fine rice would be given to 3.10 crore people in Telangana. The Congress govt decided to provide fine rice so that the poor can consume it not just on major festivals but every day.
“The people elected us for a five-year term, and we started implementing many schemes within 15 months of coming to power. But I assure you we will implement more welfare programmes in the future,” Revanth told the gathering.
He criticised former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for not providing fine rice to ration card holders during his nearly 10-year tenure. On the contrary, KCR called upon farmers not to cultivate paddy as the govt would not procure it.
“Farmers of Telangana should listen to this carefully. After advising farmers not to cultivate paddy, he cultivated paddy in his farmhouse at Erravalli. A seeds company purchased KCR farmhouse paddy at Rs 4,500 per quintal, while the farmers struggled to get even Rs 2,000 per quintal then. I am making this allegation officially, was there gold in the paddy that KCR’s farmhouse variety got such a high price?” asked Revanth.
Recalling the history of the rice distribution scheme, Revanth said former chief minister Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy of Congress first announced the scheme in 1982 in the undivided state. Before it could be implemented, elections were held, and N T Rama Rao-led TDP came to power. The then CM NTR continued it and launched coarse variety rice distribution under PDS at 2 per kg.
“Some rice millers and middlemen used to purchase the coarse rice of PDS from consumers at Rs 10 per kg and then sell it back to the govt at Rs 30 per kg, causing a Rs 10,000 crore loss per annum to the state govt. The Congress govt decided to put an end to this mafia. The previous govt gave Rs 21,000 crore worth of coarse variety paddy to the millers, but the govt did not receive either paddy or money towards the paddy to be milled into rice. We decided to supply fine rice so that it is like a festival in the lives of the poor every day,” Revanth said.
The CM also slammed the KCR govt for not completing the remaining 10 km of SLBC tunnel work during his tenure.
