Patna: Ahead of Sunday’s swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for the third consecutive term, a huge poster of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has surfaced in Patna, grabbing everyone’s attention. The poster carrying Nitish’s photo with the slogan ‘Tiger Zinda Hai,’ a throwback to the 2017 Salman Khan-starrer, has been put up at a vantage point near the planetarium, making heads turn.
Its significance is not lost on the public. Critics had almost begun writing his political epitaph in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls for his frequent flip-flops.
At one point of time, Nitish was seen holding the BJP’s party symbol, lotus, during Modi’s roadshow in Patna on May 12 amid speculations he could hand over the rein to his saffron partner in the days to come.
But silencing his critics, Nitish emerged as the ‘king maker’ with the JD(U) becoming the third-largest party in the NDA. And the poster seems like convey this emotion.
“If anything, the poster seems to be saying that Nitish still decides the political discourse in the country. This is a message to those who predicted political disaster for JD(U) in the LS polls,” JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said. “The fact of the matter is that whether you hate him or love him, you cannot ignore Nitish Kumar,” he added.
The BJP reacted cautiously to the banner. “Nitishji is very much active in politics. He is the chief minister of Bihar and his party has 12 Lok Sabha members. He doesn’t need a certificate from anyone,” BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma said, adding some over-enthusiastic supporters might have put up the banner.
Such has been the impact of JD(U) in the elections that its ally, BJP, has now formally announced to fight the next assembly polls in Bihar under the leadership of Nitish. Prior to the poll outcome, his “retirement plan” was being talked about in political circles. JD(U) and BJP contested elections on 16 and 17 seats, respectively.
