Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday flagged off 117 police vehicles to enhance road safety, manage traffic effectively, prevent high-speed dangerous driving on national highways that leads to fatal accidents, and combat human trafficking in Bihar.
The vehicles include 23 national highway patrolling vehicles (NHPVs) equipped with advanced sensor-based technology, 56 vehicles for traffic police stations across 28 districts, and 38 vehicles for the anti-human traffic unit (AHTU) in each district.
The deployment of NHPVs is crucial as more fatal accidents have been reported on national highways due to high-speed and reckless driving. This year, 44 fatal accidents caused by excessive speed have resulted in severe damage and loss of lives. Driving beyond the permissible speed limit will be penalized.
The 23 NHPVs are equipped with 4D speed radar, evidence camera, and automatic e-challan facility. They also have gas-cutting machines and foldable stretchers for rescue operations at accident sites. Linked to the emergency Dial Number 112, they will serve as first responders. The 4D speed radar has an advantage over the traditional 3D radar as it can record vertical information about the target object through the imaging sensor and produce clear resolution images of objects up to 300 meters away.
In the first phase, the 23 NHPVs will cover 1,125 km of four national highways in the state, with one vehicle assigned for every 50 km unit. The initial four national highways covered are NH-28, NH-30, NH-31, and NH-57. The Chief Minister inspected the vehicles and sought information about their functioning before flagging them off.
