Nine Migrant Labourers Rescued from Torture in Gujarat, Return Home Forced into Slavery | Bhubaneswar News
Koraput: Nine migrant labourers, reportedly subjected to torture at their workplace in Gujarat, were rescued by the Rayagada district administration and brought back home on Wednesday evening.
The workers returned to Rayagada by train. According to Gopal Mangaraj, the district labour officer of Rayagada, six of the labourers hail from the Bissamkatak block, while three are from the Kashipur block. They travelled to the Bigas area in Gujarat, seeking better employment opportunities through a local agent.
“They were employed at a textile mill, but they were neither paid their salaries nor treated humanely. The workers contacted their families for help, alleging torture at the workplace. Their families then reached out to us, and we coordinated with our counterparts in Gujarat to rescue them,” Mangaraj said.
He added that an investigation is underway to identify the agent who facilitated their move to Gujarat. “Efforts are also being made to ensure the workers receive their pending dues from the employer,” said Mangaraj.
