NHRC glare on lack of response from chief secy

Bhubaneswar: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed displeasure over the lack of response from the Odisha chief secretary in the case related to the death of eight people in a boat capsize in the Mahanadi river in Jharsuguda district on April 19. NHRC heard the case on July 29 after taking cognisance of a petition filed by human rights activist and lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy.
On April 25, NHRC had asked the chief secretaries of Odisha and Chhattisgarh and the SPs of Jharsuguda and Raigarh to submit their detailed action taken reports. In response, the Jharsuguda SP and Raigarh district magistrate have submitted their reports. “What astonishes the commission is the non-responsiveness of Odisha govt through the chief secretary, who had failed to submit any report on record in this case despite explicit directions on April 25 and June 26,” read the NHRC order.
