NHRC asks I&B secy to ensure welfare, safety of scribes | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the secretary of ministry of information and broadcasting to ensure the welfare, safety and social security of journalists in the country.
The commission passed the order on Jan 1 after hearing a petition filed by human rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, an Odisha native. He alleged in his petition that failure, negligence and inaction on the part of govt officials in dealing with the issues of journalists amounts to serious violation of human rights.
“Rural reporters, journalists and stringers who bring the plight of the common man and suffering masses are living sans social security. The Working Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955, should be implemented in letter and spirit in the country,” Tripathy said.
He said the Supreme Court recommendation regarding the applicability of Wage Board recommendations must be implemented without further delay. “SC had observed that wages as recommended by the Majithia Commission are like minimum wages. Therefore, it is non-negotiable,” he added.
Tripathy said the journalist welfare scheme must be implemented across the country. “Assistance must be provided to the journalists in case of death, permanent disability, serious illnesses or accidents. I requested the NHRC to seek the implementation status of Majithia Wage Board recommendations in all states and Union territories,” he added.
He sought the need for an integrated, comprehensive, holistic report on the issue. NHRC took cognisance of the matter and asked the Centre to consider the issues raised by Tripathy. “You are directed to take further necessary action at your end as per the directions of the commission,” read the order.
