NHAI: NHAI Launches Ambitious Tree Plantation Drive to Plant 50 Lakh Trees Along Highways | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: In a move to protect the environment, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Odisha region, on Tuesday launched “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative coinciding with the nation-wide afforestation campaign of Union ministry of road transport and highways.
Authorities stated that the initiative aimed at fostering greenery and sustainability across India’s roadways.Inaugurating the event on virtual mode, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said the aim is to plant 50 lakh trees in a year under this initiative.
He said it will augment green cover along NHs, mitigate carbon footprints and nurture a profound connection between individuals and nature. “The campaign encourages people to plant trees in reverence of their mothers, symbolizing care and nurturing,” he said. Gadkari asked the participants to take a pledge for “Swachhata” and commit to reducing carbon footprints. The minister also emphasised the significance of ethanol-blended petrol and utilization of bamboo crash barriers in highway infrastructure. The regional offices of NHAI across India, including the Odisha region led by Veerendra Singh, participated in the event. As part of the drive, the NHAI undertook a massive plantation drive on a five-acre land near Hanspal.
“We are dedicated to safeguarding the environment,” Singh said.

The order came after a contractor failed to comply with a previous directive. The contractor must cover removal costs, with compliance reports due in two weeks.
R Selvaraj, Secretary to state highways and minor ports department, inspected key road projects in Trichy district. He assessed the quality of ongoing works, including a Rs 17.2 crore project to widen a highway linking Crawford and E Pudur with the new bus terminus in Panjapur. Land acquisition is pending for further bridge expansion.
