Hyderabad: A newborn baby boy ‘sold’ for 55,000 by a couple in Kamareddy district was rescued by the police and handed over to the child development project officer on Tuesday.
Information about a fight between some people at a marketplace in Kamareddy led a Blue Colts team to enquire about the matter. Upon questioning, the police discovered that the dispute was over the sharing of money obtained from facilitating the sale of the newborn baby.
A woman, Pullapu Rajamani, and her husband, Narasimlu, from Kyasampalli village, sold their eight-day-old baby boy on March 19 to another couple from Sirikonda mandal, in the presence of middlemen Pitla Venkati and Ramulu. The police went to the couple’s house in Sirikonda, retrieved the baby, and handed the child over to the child development project officer in Kamareddy.
Cases were filed against the parents who sold the baby, the couple who bought the baby, and the middlemen, as it was in violation of adoption laws. The cases were registered under section 317 BNS, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison.
Kamareddy town SHO Chandrasekhar Reddy told TOI that the couple who sold the baby informed the police, upon questioning, that they did not want the baby. The husband was in his 60s, while the wife was in her 30s, and they were living by the roadside. The couple in Sirikonda mandal who bought the baby had been married for 18 years but were childless.
