Thane is set to receive a tunnelled road aimed at reducing congestion on Ghodbunder Road, which connects Western Express Highway to Eastern Express Highway at the northern fringe of the island that makes Mumbai, Thane and Mira-Bhayander. Tenders have been issued to appoint contractors for the project.
The project
It will include both tunnel and flyover sections
- Total length 15km approx
- 5.5 km Tunnel: GaimukhBhayander
- 9.8 km Flyover: BhayanderFountain Hotel
6 years Estimated period of construction
Forest protection | The flyover section aims to bypass Mira-Bhayander city without damaging mangroves.A road at grade would have required mangrove destruction
Part of metropolitan ring road
Due to ongoing development in Mumbai and Thane, a ring road system is being established around the cities
But a crucial link between Gaimukh in Thane and Bhayander is missing from the system
The current project aims to address the gap and improve traffic flow
Currently, the road experiences heavy traffic, which is expected to increase following the completion of Thane Coastal Road. To mitigate congestion, the tunnelled road is proposed, considering the area’s hilly terrain— An MMRDA official (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority)
