The National Testing Agency (NTA) has opened online registrations for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025. In the official brochure, NTA has outlined a section called ‘Qualifying Criteria,’ which includes a sub-section on ‘Inter-se-merit of candidates for tie-breaking.’ But what does this mean? After conducting NEET UG 2025 on May 5, NTA will release the provisional answer key.

Candidates will have the opportunity to raise objections, and once all challenges are reviewed, NTA will publish the final answer key, which will serve as the basis for the NEET UG 2025 results.
Following this, NTA will compile the merit list/All India Rank (AIR) based on qualifying criteria, eligibility norms, and relevant regulations from NMC, DGHS, MCC, DCI, and the Ministry of AYUSH, among others.
Now, what is ‘Inter-se-merit of candidates for tie-breaking’? According to the NEET UG 2025 official brochure, if two or more candidates achieve the same marks/percentile scores, their inter-se-merit will be determined based on specific tie-breaking criteria, which is as follows:
- Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the Test,
- Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by
- Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the Test, followed by
- Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the Test, followed by
- In case, a-g criteria are exhausted and tie still persists, it will be resolved through a random process with the guidance of an independent expert committee.
