‘Need a school and a hostel for the art form to flourish’: Guru Laxman Moharana | Bhubaneswar News
At 71, the life of Guru Laxman Moharana continues to revolve around Gotipua and grooming children to become deft performers just like his father late Guru Jagannath Moharana had trained him since he was eight.
What should be done for the growth of Gotipua?
Over the years, we have worked very hard to take Gotipua forward. Now we require govt help to set up a school where teachers and students can live, teach and learn.Currently, we can house a limited number of 20 to 25 students due to financial constraints.
How do you plan to take
My father devoted all his time and money to the Gotipua gurukul. When I grew up, I made certain changes so that Gotipua’s popularity increased. Often, students leave us after training. If I can have a school, hostel and they are provided with stipend then they are more likely to stay on. For that, we require financial help.
Have you ever taught students’ from abroad?
After coming to know about Gotipua, people from Italy, Chile and Poland have come and stayed with us in Raghurajpur for a limited period like 15 days to two months to learn the nuances. Most belong to theatre and want to integrate Gotipua with their performance. My son, Basant, has taught students in some universities of Europe during his tour between 2004 and 2010. He was sent by a Kolkata-based theatre group along with Kalaripattu, Purulia chhau and Baul artistes.
Have you ever performed abroad?
I went to London with my troupe in 2017. Then I performed as a vocalist. Our presentation was very well-received
Currently, what is your role in the gurukul?
I teach bandha nrutya, musical instruments, vocal and other aspects of Gotipua to students.
Gotipua requires great fitness. How do you maintain it at this age?
I keep myself very busy either with Gotipua teaching or doing household work. I have 13 to 14 cows and continue to look after them hands-on and work in our garden. I keep myself busy with other physically demanding work too.
Why is Gotipua not as popular as
The scope of showcasing the art is very limited for our artistes. An artiste needs to have experience of performance to take the art forward. Also, every student needs to learn every bit of Gotipua and teach others.
You are also teaching Gotipua to your grandsons. What if they refuse to take it forward?
I and my children are training my twin grandsons in the gurukul with a hope that they keep the tradition alive. They perform at different festivals along with my other students. I feel the appreciation and attraction will keep them glued.
