CHENNAI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of sexual coercion and harassment allegations involving a youth wing office bearer of the ruling DMK, based on a media report citing claims made by his wife. The accusations include forcing girls to “sleep with politicians”. Calling the charges “disturbing” and of “grave nature”, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Tamil Nadu DGP seeking an immediate, impartial and transparent probe. The Commission has also urged formation of an independent investigation team to prevent political interference and ensure the survivor’s safety. NCW has asked Tamil Nadu Police to register a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and submit an Action Taken Report and a copy of the FIR within three days.
