Navi Mumbai Offers 50% Penalty Waiver on Property Tax Late Payments Until March 31 | – The Times of India

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation announces 50% reduction in property tax late payment penalties

NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has offered a significant relief measure for property tax defaulters. Under the special amnesty scheme announced by the municipal commissioner Kailash Shinde, defaulters can receive a 50% waiver in late payment penalties until March 31.
The scheme requires payment of the full original property tax amount alongside the reduced penalty. Partial payments will not qualify for this benefit.
Meanwhile, NMMC has set a target of Rs 900 crore towards property tax collection for the fiscal year 2024-25, which ends on March 31.
With just a few days left to wrap up the financial year, the civic body has come up with this scheme to fill its coffers since it collected around Rs 650 crore so far. “We are regularly urging property owners to clear their dues promptly, with legal proceedings initiated against those with outstanding payments,” said Shinde.
Utilising authority granted by the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act to address substantial property tax arrears, Shinde implemented this scheme after much deliberation, taking into consideration the huge penalty amount on outstanding payments and to meet the targeted budgetary provision of Rs 900 crore for this financial year. Property owners must clear their current year’s tax obligations in full by March 31, 2025, to qualify for the 50% penalty reduction, said Shinde.
According to an official, applications must be submitted online through nmmc.gov.in or the ‘My NMMC – My Navi Mumbai’ mobile application, seeking a penalty waiver. Services are also available at Municipal Corporation Headquarters, departmental offices, and payment centres.
Payments can be made via cash, cheque, or money order at official locations, adhering to Reserve Bank of India cash payment guidelines, said a civic official. Digital payment options include debit, credit cards, internet banking, NEFT, RTGS, and UPI.
“The scheme excludes previously paid taxes and penalties from any refunds or exemptions. Benefits apply exclusively to property owners who clear current year dues in full during the specified period. We encourage citizens to utilise this opportunity and cooperate with tax recovery teams who have started to drive to recover the dues. There is no discount on the outstanding amount of original property tax, but the entire amount due, including the original property tax and penalty after discount, must be paid,” said Shinde.
