Nationwide Highway Encroachment Alert: Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy Addresses Supreme Court | Patna News – Times of India
Chhapra: Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who is also a lawyer, recently told the Supreme Court that encroachment and unauthorized construction on the highways is not just a problem in the state but the entire country and demanded strict actions against the perpetrators.
Rudy – who argues on public interest litigation occasionally – appeared before the court of Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih Thursday.
He demanded that the policy and rules for removing the obstacles that comprise road safety be strengthened and sped up. “Encroachment on highways happens in three stages. The first stage is when the land is marked for highway construction, the second stage is illegal construction while the roads are being built or repaired, and the third is encroachment followed by construction after the completion of the project,” Rudy told the SC.
He pleaded that the district magistrate of the concerned area be included in the committee and held accountable for the encroachment on the road. “When the district magistrates will be a committee member, there will be no encroachment in the area,” Rudy said.
During the intervention application, Rudy – who presented his arguments for 35 minutes – told the court that the process of removing encroachment becomes difficult. Since he represents Saran in the Lok Sabha, he is concerned about unauthorized encroachments on NH31 and 722, which pass through the district in the state, he said, adding, “This problem is not only in Saran, but it has been a national problem.”
He sought better regulatory measures by the National Highways Authority of India for any new utility connections on these routes.
