Murder triggers war of words between BJD & BJP | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: The brutal killing of police volunteer, Sahadeb Nayak (36), on the Rasulgarh overbridge here on Wednesday sparked an exchange of words between opposition BJD and BJP.
Senior BJD MLA and former minister Ranendra Pratap Swain expressed concern that the daylight murder on the busy national highway in the city indicated deteriorating security in the state. “The govt is hosting Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and has invited NRIs to the capital. Police are claiming the city is under a robust security cover. However, criminals are having a free run, terrorising people on the streets. The murder raises concerns about the safety of NRI visitors,” Swain said.
BJD MLA Ananta Narayan Jena, who visited the crime scene with his supporters, criticised the administration over the murder. “Sahadeb was brutally killed on the road. A few days ago, robbers gunned down two men while attempting to loot a jewellery store at Panikoili in Jajpur district. People are feeling unsafe,” Jena said, adding that such a ghastly murder in public view never occurred in Bhubaneswar in the past.
BJP dismissed the BJD’s accusations as unfounded and politically driven. “Public safety deteriorated under the previous govt. The past six months witnessed peaceful law and order condition. While criminals evaded arrests under the previous dispensation, the current govt maintains strict intolerance towards unlawful activities and offenders,” said law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan.
Another BJP leader said, “All the three accused involved in the Rasulgarh murder were promptly arrested. This indicated the swift police action. Multiple teams were formed to arrest the killers.”
Hundreds of supporters of Sahadeb gathered at Rasulgarh, condemning the incident. “Sahadeb bhai was a generous man, who always fed the poor and arranged shelter for the homeless. He stood by us every time and raised his voice for our rights. He also opposed illegal activities and drug trafficking in our area,” said Parsurama Swain, a resident of Kedarpalli slum.
