Murder over parking raises safety concern in apartments

Bhubaneswar: The double murder over a vehicle parking dispute near a city-based apartment on Wednesday night has raised questions about the safety of those residing in the numerous apartments throughout Bhubaneswar.
Many apartments have designated parking slots for their inhabitants, while a significant number of them clearly define through signboards and other means that they prohibit visitor vehicles inside their complexes and the security and supervising teams of the apartment complexes enforce these regulations. As a result, visitors are park their vehicles outside the apartment and when met with resistance, altercations frequently arise.
“Parking has become a genuine problem not only inside apartments but also in any open spaces in the city. The number of vehicles is increasing, but the space available for parking them is diminishing,” Bikash Mahapatra, an resident of Dristi Enclave, an apartment in Sailashree Vihar, said.
Patia resident Ritesh Sahoo said that confrontations between security staff, residents and visitors in apartment complexes have become a common occurrence, particularly due to parking issues, but the escalation to murder is appalling.
Residents have demanded a permanent resolution to this. “There must be some mechanism in apartments as well as outside for streamlining parking. The authorities should intervene and formulate a plan,” social worker Alok Kar said.
