Mumbai’s vehicular congestion rises by 15%; rationalize car ownership, say experts | Mumbai News – Times of India
Despite rising congestion on roads and parking woes, Mumbai saw a 15% increase in vehicle registrations from Jan 1 to June 30, compared to the same period last year. The corresponding increase in electric vehicles (EVs) is 19%. Though EVs too are adding to congestion, they are at least environment-friendly. Somit Sen reports
The overall vehicle registrations in Mumbai rose to 1,36,231 in 2024, up from 1,18,097 in 2023, a notable 15% increase.Tardeo, once again, recorded the highest number of registrations with 35,530 vehicles, followed by Wadala with 36,774, Andheri with 29,022, and Borivli with 34,905. The data indicates that more vehicles were registered in the island city than in any other part of Mumbai, emphasizing the growing congestion in these areas.
A detailed month-by-month analysis reveals that January saw the highest number of vehicle registrations at 25,812, followed by April with 24,519. The months of May and June experienced lower registrations due to many residents going out of town on vacation and the onset of the monsoon season. Tardeo registered the highest numbers in January (6,778) and April (6,767), reflecting its status as a central hub for vehicle registrations.
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Mumbai has seen a significant rise in the first half of 2024. A total of 6,018 EVs were registered between January and June, with Tardeo leading the pack at 1,895 registrations. Other areas like Wadala (1,184), Andheri (1,504), and Borivli (1,435) also contributed to this upward trend. The total number of EVs in Mumbai now stands at 38,000, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period last year.
