Mumbaikars, brace for sweltering days ahead

Mumbai: Mumbaikars can expect sweltering days ahead as daytime temperatures soared to 37.4°C on Wednesday, a 4.4° spike above the seasonal average. A similar surge was seen in late Feb, prompting heatwave warnings for two consecutive days, Feb 25 and 26.
In its forecast for the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated a rising trend in temperatures, with the maximum expected to touch 38°C on Sunday.
On Wednesday, IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4°C compared to Tuesday’s 36.8°C, and IMD’s Colaba observatory logged a maximum temperature of 33.4°C, which was 2.2° above normal and slightly higher than Tuesday’s 33.1°C. IMD officials attributed the spike in daytime temperatures to the strong easterly winds. Weather enthusiasts said the hot weather conditions are likely to peak between March 9 and 11.
According to IMD data, Mumbai’s all-time hottest day record for the month is 41.7°C, recorded on March 28, 1956.
