Mumbai: The Dongri police have arrested 11 members of a cyber fraudsters’ gang in an investment fraud case of Rs 8.6 lakh. Six of the accused were arrested from Goa. Police said that two of them got Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore each as commission and also visited Nepal and Cambodia in connection with the crime, said police.
This is perhaps the first case in Mumbai where the accused, who visited Cambodia in connection with a cyber crime, were arrested. Most of the cyber fraudsters allegedly operate from Cambodia, UAE, and China and the money, defrauded from the cyber crime victims, finally reaches them.
Police said that the accused provided more than 150 bank accounts to fraudsters, and these accounts were used to park the victims’ money. The arrested accused bought cars and houses using the commission money. Two cars have been seized, said police.
A police officer said that the crime was registered with the Dongri police on Aug 6 last year, in which a 60-year-old pensioner was lured with high returns and persuaded to invest Rs 8.6 lakh. The accused first sent him a message posing as an executive of a stock trading firm, SMC, and claimed the company was registered with the SEBI. Later, the accuse asked the complainant to download an app. The accused instructed the complainant to buy shares from companies shown in the app. The accused sent different account numbers to the complainant, asking him to send them money (for buying shares). The complainant could see his investment and profit in a virtual account. However, he couldn’t withdraw his money when needed. Suspecting something amiss, he approached the police.
While working on the case, police arrested six accused from Goa on Jan 31. During the probe, police seized five laptops, 16 mobile phones, and two cars.
“During the investigation, it was found that a few of the accused visited Nepal and Cambodia in connection with this crime. These accused provided more than 150 bank accounts and lots of SIM cards, with international calling/SMS facility, to operate these accounts,” said Dr Pravin Munde, zonal deputy police commissioner.
Police sources said that three accused, Akash Dusane alias Akash Sonar (29), Dinesh Tayede (30), both Nashik residents, and Raziq Patel (26), a Bhusawal resident, visited Cambodia and Nepal and met some cyber fraudsters. These accused would take different persons’ bank accounts on rent and give them fixed amounts. These accounts were used to park the money received from the cyber fraud victims.
So far, police have learnt that the accused used to get specific commissions on the transactions happening in these accounts. The two main arrested accused, Dusane and Tayede, probably got commissions of Rs 1.5 crore to two crores each. Using this money, they bought cars and homes, said police.
