21st livestock census kicks off in Mumbai: A call for citizen cooperation

Mumbai: The 21st livestock census commenced in Mumbai on November 25, 2024, jointly organised by the Animal Husbandry Department (Govt of Maharashtra) and the BMC.
The BMC has appealed to citizens to cooperate with the enumerators during this census, which will run until February 28, 2025.
As per the central govt’s directives, the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department conducts a livestock census every five years.
In the municipal area, the census will be conducted using a mobile application, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department (Govt of Maharashtra) and the BMC.
Enumerators will visit households to categorise domestic, household industries, and non-household activities, recording the available species (e.g., dogs, cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry) by age, gender, and breed in the mobile application.
“The livestock census started across the state from November 25 and will continue until February 28, 2025. During this period, the administration urges citizens to provide information and cooperate with the enumerators visiting their homes for the census,” said the civic body in a statement.
