Mumbai: A tuition teacher from Borivli, her minor son and two of her minor nephews were duped of Rs 2.6 lakh collectively by a woman who offered to find her placement at a school and admission for the three children. An FIR has been registered against the woman by Borivli police.
The 30-year-old complainant had got acquainted with the accused, Karishma, at her cousin’s residence in 2024. Karishma had inquired whether the complainant would take tuitions for her 10-year-old daughter and the complainant had agreed. Karishma claimed to be a ‘freelancing BMC agent’ for a school in Borivli.
In Aug 2024, Karishma offered to place the complainant as a teacher at the school. The complainant inquired if her seven-year-old son would get admission to the same school. The accused agreed. She asked the complainant for copies of her Aadhaar card, Pan card, HSC marksheet, residential proof, bank account details and Rs 1.15 lakh in cash in installments.
Subsequently, she discussed Karishma’s offer with one of her relatives and convinced him that his two sons could also get admission to the same school. The relative paid Karishma Rs 1.5 lakh, and gave her photographs of his sons, both aged 14, besides copies of their Aadhaar cards and birth certificates.
Thereafter, whenever the complainant and her relative inquired about the admissions and placement, Karishma kept stalling. She discouraged them from approaching the school directly to inquire about the admissions and placement.
Eventually, the complainant approached the school management and showed them the receipts given by Karishma. The school management told her that the receipts were fake. The complainant and her relative demanded their money back from Karishma, but she gave evasive replies. The complainant then approached the police.
