MUMBAI: A special CBI court on Thursday found deported gangster Chhota Rajan guilty in the murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty, which took place 23 years ago.
The court sentenced Rajan to life imprisonment for his role in the crime.
This conviction comes as Rajan is already serving a life sentence for the murder of journalist J Dey in 2011.
The Jaya Shetty murder case was one of the 71 cases that were handed over to the CBI following Rajan’s deportation from Bali in 2015.

Glimpse of the case
- Jaya Shetty was the proprietor of the Golden Crown hotel, situated in the Gamdevi area of central Mumbai.
- The businessman had been receiving extortion threats from the gang prior to the incident.
- On May 4, 2001, two suspected members of the Chhota Rajan gang entered the hotel and shot Shetty dead on the first floor.
- Although Shetty had been provided with police protection after reporting the threats, he requested the withdrawal of his security detail two months before the fatal attack.
