Bhubaneswar/Sambalpur: Muslims across the state on Wednesday observed fast, offered special prayers and took part in religious processions on the occasion of Muharram. The day passed off peacefully under the watchful eyes of the police.
While Muharram was rather low key in the state capital, Cuttack city, with a sizeable Muslim population, saw a host of events to mark the occasion.Processions were taken out and community feasts hosted on the occasion.
Senior BJD politician and former chairman of state Wakf board, Sayed Ekram Hussain, said people tried to follow tradition during Muharram. He thanked the Cuttack district administration and the police for the events passing off peacefully.
Bhadrak saw colourful procession of tazia to commemorate the occasion. In Sambalpur, Muharram passed off peacefully amid tight security. It was a low-key affair for the second consecutive year owing to law and order concerns.
To ensure smooth observance of Muharram, 25 platoons of police force, led by officers including four additional SPs, 12 DSPs and 32 inspectors were deployed across the city.
