CHENNAI: MPs of the DMK and allies held a protest in the parliament complex on Friday condemning the recurring arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka.
DMK parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi demanded that the Union govt hold “urgent” talks with Sri Lanka to find a permanent solution to the issue.
The MPs displayed placards with messages like “No more arrests,” “Justice for Tamil fishermen” and “Bring back our fishermen.”
Later, in a media platform post, Kanimozhi highlighted the seriousness of the ongoing arrests and boat seizures.
“Condemning this, under the directions of chief minister M K Stalin, DMK and alliance MPs protested in parliament, urging the Union govt to take immediate action for their release,” she posted.
The MPs sought the immediate release of the arrested fishermen and their boats.
Kanimozhi raised the issue in parliament, stating that more than 97 fishermen had been arrested by the Sri Lankan navy and were currently in jail.
She described alleged mistreatment, including being shot at and tortured. More than 210 boats were confiscated, jeopardising the fishermen’s livelihoods.
“The chief minister has been consistently requesting the Union govt and the Prime Minister to resolve the issue. But you haven’t bothered about it,” the DMK leader said.
