MPEDA: Mpeda Urges Fishermen In State To Spare Baby Fish | Bhubaneswar News
Kendrapada: The govt-managed Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and Network for Fish Quality Management and Sustainable Fishing (NETFISH) urged fishing trawlers to use only square mesh nets to protect baby fish as indiscriminate exploitation of juvenile fish is one of the reasons behind depletion of fish stock in the sea.
The fishermen should use square mesh with a cod end and size of more than 30 mm to allow small fish to find a passage to go into water even after being caught in the nets.
“We organised a meeting on square mesh net use n Paradip to convince marine fishermen. We advised them not to use small diamond nets to kill baby fish,” said Subhrakanta Mohapatra, the state coordinator of MPEDA-NETFISH.
“The fisheries sector depends on healthy marine biodiversity but current fishing practices are not always sustainable for which it is high time on the part of fisherfolks to gather eco-friendly fishing methods to save the fisheries sector and marine ecosystem.
Rampant and unregulated fishing in the sea damages the marine ecosystem,” added Mohapatra.
MPEDA authorities also flagged off an awareness vehicle at the fishing harbour in Paradip on Thursday to create awareness among marine fishermen to use only square fishing nets to save the juvenile fishes.
Earlier, fishing trawlers used to discard trash fish ,baby fish and non-edible fishes even after catching them in the sea. But due to demand for the baby fish by shrimp seed and poultry seed factories, the fishermen catch these fishes too, he said.
