More people, govt, industries rely on our forecasts: IMD’s regional director | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: India Meteorological Department (IMD), which turned 150 on Wednesday, continues to play a significant role in Odisha, which experiences cyclones, heatwaves, drought, floods and frequent lightning events, experts said.
Director of IMD’s regional centre here, Manorama Mohanty, said they always try to provide accurate weather forecasts so that farmers, fishermen, govt and industries can plan well in advance. “We are already issuing fishermen warnings, port warnings and cyclone warnings. We also give district-level and station-level warnings. We are trying to ensure that not a single event is missed. In the future, we will continue to do our work,” said Mohanty.
She said they provide meteorology-related information publicly to everyone through different platforms. “We share information with the govt via email, WhatsApp, phone calls and organising meetings. But for the public, we give information through conventional media and social media platforms,” she added.
She said there is a a mobile app through which the public can get weather information from any location. “Besides these information-sharing arrangements, we conduct research and outreach programmes. We want to educate all people regarding weather and climatic events,” she added.
Mohanty said people now rely more on IMD forecasts because they have a vast network of meteorologists and climate scientists.
Surendranath Pasupalak, former OUAT vice-chancellor, said the IMD has immensely helped farmers and fishermen since its inception. “Now IMD has evolved to become one of the best weather forecast organisations in the world. Warnings before cyclone, flood, lightning, drought and heatwave events saved many lives and properties. Its forecast data helps the govt to prepare contingency plans for people,” he added.
Sandeep Pattnaik, associate professor, School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences, IIT Bhubaneswar, said the datasets provided by the IMD are widely utilised and significantly beneficial for scholarly research.
“I extend my congratulations to the IMD on the momentous occasion of its 150th anniversary and express my anticipation that they will tackle forthcoming challenges related to meteorological and climatological forecasting with enhanced efficacy to facilitate superior disaster management and preparedness,” said Pattnaik.
