Monsoon Challenge: Ganjam district administration prepares for monsoon challenges | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: To face the challenges of the monsoon season, the Ganjam district administration is gearing up, by coordinating with all line departments for a quick response. “In a bid to prevent the breach and flooding during the monsoon season, the river embankments that are weak should be identified and steps taken to strengthen them,” said Ganjam district collector Dibyajyoti Parida at a meeting held on natural calamities in Chhatrapur on Monday.
The collector directed engineers of the water resources department to assess vulnerabilities of embankments and address repairs from previous breaches. He instructed the chief district medical officer (CDMO) and civil supply officers to be ready with essential medicines and relief materials to meet any eventuality.
The collector urged the block development officers and tehsildars to identify safe shelters for residents of low-lying areas in case of heavy rain and flood. Relief efforts will be in coordination with local NGOs, elected representatives and activists. He said the rapid response team would be deployed in each block for quick response along with NDRF and ODRAF teams.
Anjali Swain, chairperson of the zilla parishad, stressed on the timely supply of seeds and fertilizers to farmers for Kharif cultivation. Chief district agriculture officer (in-charge) S K Nanda said, “The district registered 31% less rainfall till now, affecting paddy coverage for the current Kharif season.” However, he assured that there was no shortage of seeds and fertilizers in the district.
