Mokama traders down shutters over shopkeeper’s murder

Patna: Businessmen downed their shutters in Mokama police station area on Saturday against the murder of a shopkeeper, Chandra Mohan Rai (35). He was shot dead by his sister’s son over a land dispute while returning home on Friday evening. Traders also demanded adequate security for the community.
According to police, the deceased, a native of Begusarai district, ran a readymade and an electric shop in Mokama Bazar. He used to live with his family in a rented house in Mokama’s Laharia Tola. He was returning home after closing the shop when two bike-borne criminals fired five rounds at him. A bullet hit him in the stomach and another in hand. However, assailants managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived on the spot and took trader to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Barh SDPO-1, Rakesh Kumar, said, “The deceased’s sister had transferred 20 decimal ancestral land in Begusarai to her son about six months ago. There has been an ongoing dispute over this matter between the woman’s family and her brother, Chandra Mohan. Both parties also quarrelled over the issue on Friday noon. The family of the deceased has alleged that the woman’s husband, Ajay Singh, and their son, Kunal, killed Chandra Mohan.”
The SDPO further said that the woman has been arrested in this connection, while raids are being carried out to nab Ajay and Kunal. In response to shop closures by businessmen in the locality, the SDPO stated that police patrols would be increased in the Mokama market area.
